Your First Weeks With a Guitar: Tuning, Posture and Sore Fingertips

The first month decides whether a guitar gets played or goes back in its case. Most of what makes it hard is fixable: tuning, setup and expectations.

Tune before every session

Most beginners learn in standard tuning: from the thickest string to the thinnest, E, A, D, G, B, E. A clip-on tuner or a tuner app is enough. An out-of-tune guitar makes correct fingers sound wrong, which is discouraging for reasons that have nothing to do with you.

Check the setup

If the strings sit very high above the fretboard, every chord takes more pressure than it should. A music shop or guitar technician can lower the action and check the neck. On a cheap instrument this often matters more than the instrument itself.

Sitting and holding

Sore fingertips are normal

Fingertips hurt at first and gradually toughen. Several short sessions are kinder to them than one long one. Stop if you feel sharp pain in the wrist or hand rather than tenderness in the tips.

Choose a first song, not a first book

Pick a simple song you actually like and learn the few chords it uses. Motivation carries beginners further than method. Next: why chords come before scales.
